About the Council

Who we are

Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council, also known simply as Kirklees Council, is the local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England.

We are a metropolitan single tier authority, one of five in West Yorkshire, and the 13th biggest local authority in the UK in terms of population. Since 1 April 2014 we have been a constituent council of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

On Thursday 2 May 2024 District and Parish Council elections took place in Kirklees. Voters from all 23 wards had the opportunity to elect a new Councillor to represent their local area.

The results were:

  • Labour – 24 seats
  • Conservative – 15 seats
  • Liberal Democrat- 10 seats
  • Kirklees Community Independents Group – 6 seats
  • Community Alliance – 6 seats
  • Green – 4 seats
  • Independent – 1 seat

Our Council

‘Our Council’ is an initiative to refresh and strengthen our culture, it is a way of guiding the way we work as an organisation. It has seven key principles, which can be applied to every team and service across the council.
